CBC: It’s a “bungle”! No it’s a “blunder”! Hang on: it’s a “gaffe”!

Fri, 18 Apr 2008 12:50:34 PDT
CBC: It’s a “bungle”! No it’s a “blunder”! Hang on: it’s a “gaffe”! It ain’t good, that’s for sure! Just yesterday I had to update my Monday blog entry because the fair and balanced state-owned CBC Newsworld kept changing its mind about the Conservative government’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Maxime Bernier, and how to officially describe his, um, verbal malfunction. On Monday I showed you how Canada’s cable news networks—the state-owned one and the citizen-owned one against which t

Oil up! Freak out! Dow up? Shut up!

Fri, 18 Apr 2008 12:50:34 PDT
Oil up! Freak out! Dow up? Shut up! The state-run media in Canada (and the citizen-owned media who do their best to compete with them) all lament, daily (with intra-day lament updates, all day long), the price of a barrel of oil, and the resulting price of gas. (Of course they don’t have the foggiest clue what they’re talking about, but they pretend they do.) Even as I was writing this, the state-owned CBC did a story about the latest rise in gas prices. Apparently it’s getting h

Wannabe Hi-tech thieves are using UMPCs

Thu, 24 Apr 2008 05:25:31 PDT
Almost a year ago I wrote about how my UMPC helped me in a security project that I was working on. So I was not surprised at all when I read today this news today about how thieves used the Asus Eee PC to steal credit card information in Brazil. The cheapest UMPC in town, the Asus EEE PC, has fallen into the hands of three criminals in Brazil, using it to rig ATM to grab credit card information and personal information numbers for cloning credit cards. What is available for the good guys is

Reality TV Recaps: Big Brother, Top Chef

Thu, 24 Apr 2008 05:25:42 PDT
We haven’t fully recovered yet from the injustice of Carly Smithson being voted off American Idol last night, but we’ll try to remain strong and deliver a few other reality TV show recaps. To wit… Big Brother: We found Sheila and Adam utterly charming together, especially when they were shackled after having lost the luxury comp. Sure, Sheila snapped at Adam incessantly — but seeing her crawl into bed with Adam while wearing nothing but her bra and panties was all the proof we needed to know t

The Plumbiest Plumber In All The Land!

Thu, 24 Apr 2008 05:25:53 PDT
This morning I am home so that our water heater can be replaced. As a side benefit we had him take a look at our garbage disposal which stopped working a couple months ago. After about five minutes of fiddling he pulled out one of CootieBoy’s metal spoons - it was completely mangled and nasty. And voila - the disposal works again. I LOVE our plumber. And now he and three of his guys are in the garage replacing the water heater. And can I tell you? The prices he quoted to replace it were AWESOM

How to use good feedback (and other stuff)

Thu, 24 Apr 2008 05:26:17 PDT
As a writer, I think one of the most important tools to have in your toolbox is…a good critique partner. Someone who is not afraid to tell you what’s bad and what’s good. What works and doesn’t. Someone who will point out the glaring errors and the force you to ask yourself what IS the characters Goals-Motivation-Conflict. Ads on Contraception: How Far is TOO Far?

Thu, 24 Apr 2008 05:27:44 PDT
Ok, so maybe the people who run the ad campaigns for Durex Condoms should keep their mouths shut for once. It’s great that the makers of condoms want to advertise and promote safe sex practices….I think….but how far is too far? If there’s a fine line between promoting safe sex and being crude, then they’re walking a mighty thin line! I’m not so sure that a giant billboard with a woman’s mouth taped on either side with a package of XXL condoms near her face is helping people everywhere realize
